Many of the identifiable dolphins using Sarasota Bay on a regular basis are of known age and/or sex, as a result of the long-term research efforts of the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, operated jointly by Mote Marine Laboratory and the Chicago Zoological Society. The distribution of these animals is shown in this histogram (this presents data only for identifiable individuals of known age and/or sex, not every dolphin using Sarasota Bay). It should be noted that very few dolphins make it to "old age" -- more than 40-50 years old -- and that females tend to live longer than males.
