Blackburn Bay is a long slender bay near the communities of Osprey, Laurel, Nokomis, and Casey Key. The bay, named for early settlers who arrived in the 1880s, is designated an Outstanding Florida Water and is thereby legally protected from degradation. Blackburn Bay enjoys relatively good circulation and water quality because of its proximity to the Venice Jetties (pass) to the south. South Creek flows into Blackburn Bay from Oscar Sherer State Park. The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program study area includes this bay.
