Public invited to Legacy Trail trestle opening Tuesday, Sept. 21

Family-oriented activities will mark the official opening of the Dona Bay and Roberts Bay trestles on Tuesday, Sept. 21, on the Legacy Trail. The trestles have been the missing links in the county's premier recreational trail.
In partnership with The Trust for Public Land, the county bought the scenic Venice-Sarasota railway corridor for $11.75 million in 2005. The 10.6-mile paved, nature and recreational trail was completed in 2008.
 • Opening event: 5 p.m. at the pavilion behind the Nokomis Community Center, 234 Nippino Trail.
 • Activity: Bicycle safety tips, free helmet fittings, a demonstration of a high-wheel bicycle and live music.
 • Ceremony: 6 p.m. in the pavilion
 • Activity: Remarks by county officials and community leaders, with a ribbon cutting at the trail. That will be followed by a second ribbon cutting at the Dona Bay trestle in Laurel and a twilight bicycle ride.
