Dumpster Day Coming to City of Sarasota April 16th

Sarasota residents are encouraged to participate in a citywide Dumpster Day, Saturday, April 16, 2011 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The City of Sarasota will partner to provide two large Dumpsters for residents to dispose of unwanted household items, including hazardous waste and electronics.

Dumpsters will be located in the following neighborhoods:

  • Alta Vista: SE corner of School Ave. and Shopping Way (across from Payne Park)
  • Gillespie Park: SW corner of 4th St. and Osprey Ave.
  • *Sarasota County Parking Garage: SW corner of Ringling Blvd. and School Ave.
  • *(Hazardous waste collected at this location only)
Accepted items include:
  • Televisions/electronics
  • Wood and furniture
  • Computers/printers
  • Small appliances
  • Paint (only collected at the County Parking Garage location)
Household refuse which can be placed in a green solid waste container for weekly trash pickup will not be accepted. Large appliances including stoves, air conditioners and refrigerators also will not be collected. For information on how to dispose of these items, contact Waste Management: 497-8088.

During last year's Dumpster Day, over 13 tons of unwanted materials were collected, including 19,055 pounds of trash (tires, electronics, wood, furniture), 5,462 pounds of hazardous waste (paint, aerosols, flammables) and 2,000 pounds of shredded documents.

Environmental sustainability is a top priority for the City of Sarasota. The City is partnering with Waste Management, the Greater Downtown Sarasota Action Team, Sarasota County Hazardous Waste Management and Gillespie Park and Alta Vista neighborhoods to bring the Dumpsters to the neighborhoods.
