Sarasota County to celebrate Siesta Beach Day at Ed Smith Stadium

Sarasota County and the Baltimore Orioles will celebrate Siesta Beach Day at Ed Smith Stadium, 2700 12th St., Sarasota, on Friday, March 23, when the Orioles take on the Boston Red Sox.

In recognition of Siesta Beach being designated the No. 1 beach in the USA, Parks and Recreation staff will be at the ballpark handing out limited edition sunglasses, T-shirts and beach towels. The Orioles also will celebrate the No. 1 beach in the USA with summertime beach music in between innings and photos of the team mascot, the Oriole Bird, relaxing on Siesta Beach.

“Working with the Orioles has been great,” said Sarasota County Parks and Recreation General Manager Carolyn Brown. “From supporting local youth sports to promoting Sarasota County as a destination for all their fans, the ballclub is a vital part of what makes this community special.”

Since Siesta Beach was named the No.1 beach in the USA in May 2011 by Dr. Stephen Leatherman (Dr. Beach), area businesses say they have seen an increase in customers and revenues.

“While thousands of people are coming here for Siesta Beach, what they discover beyond the beach is that we have so much more,” said Brown.
