To date, the SBEP has managed the treatment of roughly five acres of exotic vegetation by professional contractors as strategic sites throughout the park, enabling the implementation of LID design features incorporating native plants. The SBEP, in partnership with its contractor Around the Bend Nature Tours, also manages service education events, K-12 service learning trips and supportive teacher training workshops to educate the community about watershed issues including invasive species, wildlife habitat, and the benefits of LID to water quality.
Nearly 1,200 volunteers hours were dedicated to the removal of 4,200 pounds of invasive air potato plants since the beginning of 2015 under the service learning component of the project. The SBEP will continue to provide input and work collaboratively with Sarasota County, SWFWMD and community partners toward the improvement and enhancement of North Water Tower Park.
