SBEP seeks intern for monitoring program
The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program (SBEP) seeks a temporary, part-time, paid intern to support an ecological monitoring project in Sarasota Bay from April to August 2021 (start and end dates negotiable). The project, Eyes on Seagrass, is an extension of a Florida Sea Grant community monitoring effort that began in Charlotte Harbor in 2019. The goal of the project is to engage community members in monitoring macroalgae and their potential impacts on seagrass habitats.
Under the supervision of the SBEP Staff Scientist and Director of Planning and Communications, the intern will:
-
Create and execute a plan for training community volunteers on macroalgae sampling methods in SBEP bays in June and July 2021. The intern will attend at least one volunteer training for the Charlotte Harbor Eyes on Seagrass program in April 2021 to help develop the Sarasota Bay training plan.
-
Recruit and organize volunteers for July 2021 sampling. The intern will have access to SBEP’s existing volunteer networks for recruitment.
-
Act as the main point of contact for volunteer sampling groups in July 2021. Ensure volunteers follow established monitoring procedures. Answer volunteer questions promptly. Schedule times for volunteers to drop off samples, data sheets, and equipment at the SBEP office in downtown Sarasota.
-
Coordinate shipments of tissue samples for analysis.
-
Make basic identifications of marine macroalgae based on a key.
-
Organize and analyze citizen-collected and laboratory data.
