Fishing line recycling containers available
Monofilament recycling containers are now available to the public at three popular fishing locations: Whitaker Gateway Park, Ken Thompson Park and Tony Saprito Pier. Recycling used fishing line helps protect the environment and reduce wildlife entanglements. A total of five containers were recently installed.
The containers are the result of a collaboration between Sarasota Military Academy, Sarasota Bay Estuary Program and the City's Parks and Recreation team. The recycling tubes were made by SMA students for anglers to easily dispose of used fishing line and prevent entanglement injuries to shorebirds and marine life. SBEP facilitated the donation to the City and the City's Parks and Recreation team recently installed the containers.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission encourages monofilament recycling and is educating the public about the dangers of discarded fishing line through its Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program. Visit the program's website to learn more.
